Why Do I Still Feel This Way When I KNOW I’m Fine?
“Your brain can know you’re okay while your body is still saying, ‘Yeah… I’m not so sure about that.’”
Andrea Knapp
But apparently your body did not get the memo. 😂
Maybe someone said something that rubbed you the wrong way and three hours later you’re STILL replaying the conversation.
Maybe something happened that really wasn’t that big of a deal, but your reaction felt way bigger than the situation.
Or maybe there isn’t even anything obviously wrong. Life is actually okay, but you feel tense, irritated, emotional, overwhelmed or just off and you cannot figure out why.
...if you’re an overthinker like me, this is usually where the investigation begins.
Why am I feeling like this?
What triggered me?
Am I stressed?
Did I sleep like crap?
Is it hormones?
Did I do something wrong?
Is someone mad at me?
And before you know it, your brain has opened 37 tabs trying to figure out what the hell is happening. 😂
I know that cycle VERY well.
Knowing better doesn't always mean feeling better
This is something I wish I had understood years ago.
You can logically know you're okay and still have a completely different reaction happening inside your body.
For a long time, I thought if I could just understand WHY I felt a certain way, I could think my way out of it.
And trust me, I tried.
I analyzed things to death. I replayed conversations. I tried to find the exact thought, moment or reason behind how I was feeling because surely if I could figure it out, I could make it stop.
Except sometimes there wasn't an obvious answer.
That became really interesting to me when I started learning more about emotions and the body.
What if your body is holding onto something your brain isn't thinking about anymore?
One of the ideas behind Emotional Body Coding is that emotions and experiences we haven't fully processed can remain connected to patterns in the body.
I know, I know. The first time you hear something like "stored emotions" you might immediately think this is getting a little woo woo. 😂
I get it.
But think about something you've probably experienced before.
Have you ever smelled something and INSTANTLY been taken back to a memory?
Heard a song and suddenly felt emotional?
Walked into a room and immediately felt uncomfortable even though nothing had actually happened yet?
Had someone use a certain tone with you and felt your entire body react before you even had time to think?
Our experiences aren't just neat little files stored away in our brains that never affect us again.
Our bodies respond too.
And sometimes that response doesn't make logical sense based only on what's happening right now.
This is one of the reasons I fell in love with Emotional Body Coding
When I started doing this work, I became fascinated by what can come up when we stop asking only, "What's wrong with me?" and start getting curious about what our body might be responding to.
Sometimes something comes up that makes total sense.
Other times it's something you haven't thought about in YEARS.
And sometimes you're like, "Seriously? THAT?" 😂
That's part of what makes this work so interesting to me.
We're not sitting there forcing you to relive every awful thing that's ever happened to you. We're not digging around trying to manufacture some giant emotional breakthrough.
We're simply asking questions, using the Body Code system and muscle testing, and seeing what your body identifies as something that may be ready to release.
I don't decide what comes up.
You don't have to come into a session knowing exactly what the problem is.
And you definitely don't have to have your shit together first.
Thank God, because I'd be out of a job. 😂
And no, I don't think everything is a stored emotion
This part matters to me.
If you're exhausted, maybe you need sleep.
If you haven't eaten all day, maybe you need food.
If something hurts, there may be a physical reason that needs to be evaluated.
If you're struggling with your mental health, professional mental health support matters.
I don't believe every problem in our lives can be explained by one thing, and I'm immediately skeptical anytime someone tells me they've found the ONE answer for everybody.
Humans are way more complicated than that.
What I do believe is that our emotional experiences deserve a seat at the table too.
Mind, body, emotions, nutrition, environment, habits, relationships, stress and everything else happening in our lives can all be pieces of the puzzle.
That's actually become a huge part of how I look at wellness now.
So the next time you're thinking, "Why am I STILL reacting like this?"
Maybe don't immediately beat yourself up for it.
Get curious.
Maybe your reaction isn't proof that you're failing at all the mindset work you've done.
Maybe knowing better isn't always enough to make your body instantly feel different.
And maybe instead of asking "What the hell is wrong with me?"
there's a better question:
"What might my body be trying to tell me?"
That's a question I've become pretty obsessed with.
And we're going to talk about it a LOT more around here. 💚
