What Actually Happens in an Emotional Body Coding Session?
“You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong before you start listening to what your body has to say.”
Andrea Knapp
Have you ever heard me talk about Emotional Body Coding and thought, “Okay Andrea... but what the hell do you actually DO?” 😂
Fair question.
If you've never experienced a session, words like muscle testing, stored emotions and energy can sound a little... out there.
And listen, I get it.
I wasn't born sitting around talking about trapped emotions and energy imbalances either.
I spent YEARS trying to figure out why I could logically understand something, talk about it, work through it and still sometimes feel like my body was hanging onto a completely different story.
That's one of the things that eventually led me to this work.
So instead of giving you some complicated explanation, I thought I'd just walk you through what a session with me actually looks like.
First, you don't need to show up with your whole life figured out
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions.
You don't need to walk in knowing exactly what emotion you're holding, what age it happened, why you're feeling stuck or which childhood experience we need to dig into.
You can literally show up and say:
“I don't know. I just feel off.”
We can start there.
Some people come in with something specific they want to work around, maybe confidence, stress, a relationship pattern, feeling stuck or something they keep reacting to.
Other people have absolutely no idea where to begin.
Both are completely fine.
So how do we figure out what to work on?
This is where muscle testing comes in.
Emotional Body Coding works with the idea that the subconscious mind and body can hold information outside of what we're consciously thinking about all day.
Using muscle testing, we ask yes or no questions and work through the Body Code system to help identify areas the body may be ready to address.
And this is usually the part where somebody asks:
“But how does my body KNOW that?”
Welcome to the rabbit hole. 😂
The short version is that your conscious mind isn't running everything happening inside your body.
Think about it. You aren't consciously telling your heart to beat or reminding your body how to digest lunch.
There is a whole lot happening underneath conscious thought.
Muscle testing is simply the tool we use to ask questions and look for responses.
And no, I'm not reading your mind
I promise. 😂
I'm also not diagnosing you, telling you what happened in your past or deciding what your body "must" be holding.
We follow the responses.
Sometimes what comes up makes immediate sense to the person.
They'll say, “Oh my gosh. YES. I know exactly what that's connected to.”
Other times?
Nothing.
And that's okay too.
You don't have to manufacture a story just because an emotion came up.
That's actually something I really like about this work.
You don't have to relive everything
For some people, this is HUGE.
There may be things in your life you have already talked about 900 times.
You understand what happened.
You've analyzed it.
You've journaled about it.
You've gone through every possible why.
You don't necessarily need another three-hour investigation into it.
With Emotional Body Coding, we're not trying to force you to relive every painful thing you've ever experienced.
Sometimes we identify an emotion or imbalance, get whatever information seems necessary and then work on releasing it.
That's it.
No dramatic excavation required.
What does releasing something actually mean?
Once something is identified, I use a magnet along the governing meridian, which is an energy pathway used in this type of work, with the intention of helping the body release the identified energetic imbalance.
I know.
The first time you hear that you're probably thinking, “Andrea, you lost me at magnet.” 😂
That's okay.
You do not have to believe exactly what I believe for us to have a conversation about it.
I'm much more interested in people being curious than blindly accepting something because I said it.
What do people feel afterward?
This is different for everybody.
Some people tell me they feel lighter or calmer.
Some notice something that used to bother them doesn't have quite the same emotional charge.
Some are tired.
Some get emotional.
Some don't notice anything dramatic at all.
And I think it's really important to say that because I don't want this work presented like some magical session where everyone walks out floating through the parking lot with their entire life healed.
That's not how I look at healing.
Our emotions are one piece of a MUCH bigger picture that includes our mental health, physical health, nutrition, sleep, relationships, environment, habits, stress and the support we have around us.
Emotional Body Coding is one tool.
It's a tool I happen to really love, but it's still one tool.
The weirdest part might be how normal the session actually feels
Most sessions are basically us talking, asking questions, laughing, probably saying “well THAT'S interesting” at least once 😂 and following what comes up.
You don't have to perform.
You don't have to say the right thing.
And you definitely don't need to arrive with some perfectly organized healing plan.
You just show up.
We get curious and we see what your body has to say. 💚
