Why I Say "The OCD" – The Power of Words
Hey hey CollectHERS! So, dealing with OCD is a big part of my life. It's about noticing when those OCD thoughts start to creep in and stopping them before they take over completely. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels like a full-time job just managing those moments. But there’s something else that’s been a game changer for me – how I talk about these challenges. Switching from saying "my OCD" to "the OCD" might sound like a small tweak, but trust me, it feels liberating. It's like I'm not claiming ownership of the disorder anymore; it's just a visitor, not a permanent part of me. In this blog, I'll share why this shift in language has been so impactful for me and why the words we choose when talking about mental health are more important than we might think.
When I first started dealing with OCD, it felt like it was a part of my identity, something inseparable from who I am. Every ritual, every check—it all seemed like a defining trait. But when I began referring to it as "the OCD," something shifted. It started to feel less like a defining characteristic and more like a condition that I was managing, not something that managed me. This subtle shift in language helped me to externalize the disorder, making it something I could observe and deal with, rather than something that defined my existence.
The words we use shape our perception of reality. When we personalize an illness by saying "my," we inadvertently take ownership of it, which can affect how we deal with it emotionally and psychologically. By using "the," we create a slight but significant distance, allowing us to frame our relationship with the illness differently. It's not just semantics; it's about the psychological impact of language and its power over our personal identity.
I’ve seen firsthand how powerful this small change in language can be, and I know I’m not alone. This shift from 'my' to 'the' isn’t just about OCD—it can apply to any condition. By sharing these experiences, my aim is to spark a broader conversation about how we all discuss and approach mental health. Whether it's depression, anxiety, or any other mental health challenge, the words we choose can profoundly influence how we confront these issues.
Final Thoughts

Are you giving it a place of power in your identity, or are you positioning yourself to manage it as something external? The power of words is immense, and with the right ones, we can change our perspective and perhaps find a new path forward in our healing process.
